Winston-Salem was an interesting place to live, not only because of the city itself, but for the mix of people who called it home. I'd first 'met' the city while in the Army Reserve (312th Evacuation Hospital) where I was allowed to ride a 24 hour shift with Forsyth EMS rather than attend the monthly drill meetings at the reserve center just south of downtown. Sights such as the one above ( a Shell station on East Sprague) added to the attraction I felt, so when Kathy and I moved back to the state, Winston-Salem was uppermost in my mind.
I'd come to know many of the folks with EMS and also some of the local rescue squad members, including Forsyth Rescue Squad. When we bought our home on Village Place and found this to be in their area of coverage, I naturally joined and became an active member for the time we lived there. During my time there I obtained my paramedic license and gained much in the way of experience through the tutelage of such members as Bob Buchanan who served as Chief during the time I was there.
